K Dance was incorporated and received IRS non-profit
status in 2000. Permanent exemption from federal income tax was
received in March 2005.
This professional dance company presents concerts,
lecture-demonstrations and master classes for the purpose of educating
and informing the public about the art of dance, particularly
contemporary modern dance. K Dance focuses on the creative process
of dance, both in educational programs and in developing concerts
for the veiwing public. Thematic material in contemporary modern
dance often is abstract in content, yielding a small audience
base. K Dance educates the public about modern dance, therefore
developing a more confident and wiser audience.
As a dance producer, K Dance provides opportunities
for other companies and artists to have their work professionally
produced. "Yes, Virginia - Dance," an annual invitational,
which begun in 1999, is an example of this opportunity.
K Dance serves as a vehicle for creative projects
for the artistic director of the company, as well as other artists
in the region. "For Addie," a theatre work inspired
by Adeline "Addie" Atkinson, who built the Hotel Richmond
in 1903, was produced by K Dance in 2005. The artistic direction
of K Dance collaborated with Jennie Dotts, Executive Director
of ACORN (Alliance to Conserve Old Richmond Neighborhoods) and
photographer/writer Maurice Duke to produce this work. K Dance
regularly combines efforts with other organizations in the area
(Firehouse Theatre Project, Barksdale Theatre, Richmond Ballet)
to produce innovative projects.
